    Every year millions of people around the world, wanting to fix the appearance of their nose, refer to plastic surgeons. Some people do not like their noses the way they were born with, others complain about aging-induced changes in their nose. Another reason for the application is the blows to the nose or breathing uncomfortably. Nose is the most important characteristic element of the human face. The appearance can change enormously by some minor changes.

    It is very important for a successful aesthetics, that the plastic surgeon and the patient understand each other very well. Realistic expectations and trust on the dominance and experience of the plastic surgeon should be established at the first meeting.     Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

    It is very important for a successful aesthetics, that the plastic surgeon and the patient understand each other very well. A nose, which is not only ideal, but in harmony with the face as well, should be aimed.

    Whether the skin is thick or thin oily or dry, genetic features and age should be considering during planning of the operation. The nose has to be fully developed, which is during the ages of 15 and 16, and the personality should be mature. In certain cases, where it affects the breathing, the surgery can be done earlier. Plastic surgeon may advise additional procedures such as chin for a better facial appearance may propose additional initiatives.


    Deciding on operation

    Whether the operation, to be applied, is solely functional or for cosmetic purposes, the selection of your plastic surgeon is very important. Your plastic surgeon will explain to you, what he/she is expecting from the operation, and the risks of the operation. The planning on the photos may give you an idea about the result. After the procedure is planned, your surgeon will ask you questions about your medical history, and will provide you information about anesthesia, surgery, hospital, budget.


    Operation

    Nose job or rhinoplasty means, in medicine, to reshape the nose. Incisions are made inside the nose to reach the nose cartilage and bones. Sometimes a 3-mm incision is made between the nostrils. Then, bone and cartilage can be re-sized to provide the desired shape. For example, if the nasal tip is thick, the cartilages can be reduced size, or the angle between the nose and upper lip can be changed in order to provide the desired look. At the end of the operation the soft tissues are placed on the new nose structure and the incisions are sutured. After your procedure is completed, internal tubes or packing will be placed inside your nose and a splint or bandages placed on the outside to support and protect the new structures during initial healing and are removed after a short while.


    After the Operation

    Mold, placed over the nose , is kept for 6-7 days in order to protect the new shape of your nose. You will feel swelling in your face the day after surgery. Pain in the nose is quite rare, but still pain killers are advisable. There will be bruising and swelling, especially around the eyes, cold compress will be applied on this area.

    It is very important that you follow the suggestions of your plastic surgeon carefully. Keep your head elevated for a few days after surgery. Exercise and risk of blow to your nose should be minimized. If you are using heavy glasses, they should not be pressing on the nose bridge.

    The postoperative follow-up is important to observe the recovery process after this procedure and routine follow-up is made twice during the first week. In the 3., 6. And 12. Month after the surgery a follow up is made. Of course, you need to tell your surgeon immediately if anything went wrong.

    Health insurance does not cover aesthetic nose surgery. However, surgery for functional reasons such as asphyxiation or deformities after taking a blow on the nose are covered by the health insurance partially or completely.

    Post operative patient satisfaction is very high, if the surgeon is talented and expert in his/her field, but it is always possible, if desired, to make small re-touches. Patients who got unfortunate results should not be upset, there is always room for further improvement in the nose aesthetics.
